Guest Room Redo

My brother finally moved out so got my guestroom back!

Before the walls were a light blue which wouldn't have been too bad, but the previous owners decided to sponge it.  On top of the sponging they only did it a foot from the ceiling.  LOL!  So away with the blue!

In the process, we changed colors THREE times!  One was too peach with the blue carpet, one seemed to olive, third was just right.  A nice sweet cream.  We also pulled all the base boards and changed them from a raw wood to white.

A small TV will be on this wall after we can get a mount.

The cabinets contain all of my canned food storage now. 
Across the top of the headboard will be three framed pictures of olden parchment constitutions.  That will have to wait until our next paychecks roll in though.

Tree of Life Pendant

Made this for a birthday present.  It's wire wrapped around a geode in a tree pattern.  I've been making quite a few lately and putting them in my etsy.  Usually I have them hanging as a necklace on a black cord, but this one probably won't be worn so I made this wire hanger for it to be displayed.

Sourdough Start

I'm not the biggest fan of sourdough bread, but I'm trying it again to see if my tastes have changed, lol.  If not sourdough start can be made into pancakes, english muffins, .... whatever.

Sourdough Start

2 cups warm water
2 cups flour
3 TBS sugar
1 TBS yeast
1/2 tsp salt if desired

Mix all in a large bowl or container.  Cover, but leave loose for escaping gas.  Leave at room temperature for two days, stirring with a non-metal utensil when you think about it.

Make it at least a six cup container, I made this in a glass quart jar once and it oozed out all over my pantry.  Cleaning that up wasn't fun!  You can see my container here is way large.  If I decide I like sourdough again I'll probably be on the look out for a smaller container.  However, a plastic container with a cover like this is a great option as you can just shake the jar instead of stirring it.  Just tighten the top and shake then loosen the top when you are ready to leave it again.

Strawberry and Raspberry Jam

I was down to my last jar of peach jam (dundundunnn) so I decided I needed to refill the jam supply.  Had some strawberries on their last leg in my fridge and a frozen block of raspberry puree in my freezer waiting to be jam-ized, so my fruit supply was already to go.  Washed up some jars, and picked two pectin boxes out of my year supply and I was ready!



If you are thinking about trying jam, go for it.  It's really easy, you just follow the instructions in the box.  Basic recipe is pectin, sugar, and fruit.  Sometimes lemon juice is needed for color, but both of mine didn't need it. 

Puree fruit
put in a large pot, heat on high
add pectin
bring to a rolling boil
add sugar
bring to a rolling boil
cook 1-4 minutes
ladle into jars
screw on tops
place upside down for 15ish minutes
place right side up and let sit overnight




Made 18 jars today.  And would have made more if I had extra jars.  It's a piece of cake!

Cheese Sauce Nachos

Had some veggies about to go bad, so decided to use them up!  I made a cheese sauce and heated up a can of chili, chopped the veggies and put the toppings out in a little buffet.  Build your own nachos night.


Cheese Sauce

2 TBS butter
2 TBS flour
2 cups milk
2 cups shredded cheese
salt and pepper

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until it forms a paste. Gradually stir in the milk so that no lumps form. Cook and stir until thickened, then remove from the heat and stir in the cheese until smooth.  Add salt and pepper to taste.      
*For a thicker sauce add less milk.


Our buffet included:
Taco chips, chili, cheese sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese, olives, sour cream.
